A professional development approach to science education that views science teaching as inquiry

TERC, in partnership with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, invites high school teachers to apply for a one-week, all-expenses-paid institute on the beautiful coast of Maine, Sun 21-Sat 27 July 2024. Application deadline is March 4th 2024.

The LEAP program is the first early algebra curriculum for students in grades K-5.

In this chapter, we describe findings from a retrospective interview study with parents one to two years after they participated in HSE. Through qualitative analysis of the interviews, three distinct interest pathways emerged: (a) engineering focused, (b) prior interest focused, and (c) family values focused. The findings problematize traditional approaches to studying STEM-related interests and highlight the importance of understanding the complex ways families make sense of and engage with STEM through play and other informal learning experiences.

MPACT provides opportunities for students to engage in computational thinking, spatial reasoning, and mathematical concepts through design and hands-on making projects.

Since joining TERC in 1990, Sue Doubler has developed a rich and diverse body of work centered primarily on elementary school science teaching and learning, and on ways that technology can support teachers and students. As her most recent project, “Empowering Teachers Through VideoReView,” is winding down, we took the opportunity to talk with Sue about her work and time at TERC.
