Women of Color in STEM
Biography
Machienvee (pronounced as “mashenvee”) Villanueva Lammey is a first-generation, Filipina immigrant and a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. Her main research interest lies at the intersection of race-ethnicity and education. In the past, she has been involved in various projects that focus on diversity and inclusion in higher education. She is currently writing her dissertation, which is a qualitative study that examines how the multiple identities of women of color graduate students shape their experiences in white, male-dominated STEM spaces. Broadly, her research engages intersectional inquiry to understand how race, ethnicity, class, and gender function as analytically distinct and overlapping systems of oppression and resistance in academia and learning spaces. As a researcher of color, she is committed to advancing participation and promoting engagement of historically marginalized groups in STEM.
