STEM for All Multiplex (2020)

Description

The STEM for All Multiplex  reflects a vision of a rapidly changing science communication landscape in which STEM educational researchers create, share, and discuss video narratives of federally funded, innovative, projects to improve science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science (STEM and CS) education with multiple audiences, increasing awareness, communication, collaboration, and dissemination.

The STEM for All Collaboratory project enhanced knowledge sharing through the creation and facilitation of two innovative, multimodal online environments, the STEM for All Video Showcase and the STEM for All Multiplex. Presentations from each year’s annual STEM for All Video Showcase were imported to the STEM for All Multiplex site (Multiplex.Videohall.com), which now houses 1,620 video presentations as well as transcripts of the rich online discussion that accompanied each presentation. Throughout the year, the Multiplex hosted interactive themed events, each of which offered a blog, related video presentations, an interactive webinar, resources, and a synthesis brief.

Although the project has now ended, all video presentations and interactive themes remain available to the public. We invite you to explore presentations of interest by using the filters or searching on presenter names.

Thank you so much for visiting our video. The Multiplex is still available for all to view and filter the 1,620 3-min video presentations of innovative, federally funded, work to improve STEM and CS and to broaden participation. We hope you will try it out. We’d love to hear if this is a valuable resource to you. Post your impressions, feedback, and questions. Thanks!!!

I’ve been so impressed by the Multiplex! It’s been a great way to learn about other projects and utilizes some of the best features of social media to get us sharing and communicating our NSF work more widely. Being part of one of the past STEM for all Video Showcases really pushed me to think more creatively about dissemination of work both on that project and subsequent projects. Thanks for the gentle nudge! We are so fortunate at TERC to have your team host a video sharing event for us–what a great way to get to know the work of colleagues across different projects and units! I wonder what you learned through the process of bringing the larger Multiplex idea to fruition and what new ideas it has sparked for you.

Traci, thanks for the kind words. You asked what we have learned and what new ideas it sparked. The one area where I wish we had even greater success was bringing in practitioner voices, so that the Showcase could serve as a way to bridge the work of researchers and teachers. We found that teachers who came were often reticent to post. When we created a showcase on STEMTLnet where the videeos were created BY teachers FOR teachers this was not the case! So still thinking how to bridge the cultures of researchers and practitioners and how to empower educator voices. (So if you are a teacher looking at this, don’t hesitate to post!).

I’ve found the Multiplex very helpful over the last several years, regularly using it to point colleagues and potential partners to brief, engaging visions of our work. Thank you.

Moreover, I really appreciate this video. As researchers, I think we often struggle with more outward-facing messaging, and this Multiplex video about the Mutliplex (very meta!) does a great job of providing an accessible, inviting overview to this resource.

Thanks, Teon. We are pleased to hear about what has been valuable about the Multiplex for you and your team. Over the years, we have heard from researchers that being able to reuse (short) videos (beyond the Showcase event itself) has been valuable, as they do bring the work to life in a way that is that is different and effective. The Edge team has amassed quite a collection that we are excited to also share here as part of this TERC collection!

I am so grateful for the Multiplex! I frequently return to videos to get a brief overview of the current (or very recent) leading edge of several fields and find myself gaining inspiration as well as information. Many people I interact with refer to the power of video to convey information, engage, and inspire. I’m curious to know what insights your team has gained over the years–from your own observations as well as what you’ve learned from video creators and video viewers–about what makes video such a powerful medium.

Eric, thanks for your message. Always reassuring to hear that the Multiplex served a purpose and was useful to those who engaged with it! As to what makes video a powerful medium, it is accessible, quick to view, and emotive. We have found that hearing the enthusiasm of teachers, their testimonials, and seeing actual student engagement counts for a lot, especially for educators. Where as researchers look to see evidence of controlled trials, many practitioners want to see how teachers and students engage. What it looks like in practice. This is way easier to show in video than in text. Thanks again for taking the time to write!

Thanks, Eric! We are so happy to hear how this has been valuable to you in your work. From our surveys over the years, we have consistently heard from project teams about the value of video for lots of reasons. First, while creating the video itself can be a difficult and often laborious process, many have shared that this process (of creating the video) itself has been valuable and reflective as they were forced to work together to create the story that they would like to communicate. This has been particularly beneficial to some of the larger projects with lots of partners.

As to the video as a format itself, we have consistently heard that it is one that allows projects to communicate their work to a much broader audience as it has been described as ‘digestible’ and presents the work in a way that is richer than in print. It has also allowed them to bring in different voices, including those of participants which can be especially powerful.

I could probably go on and on, but thought I’d share links to some of our testimonials with direct quotes about this from projects. These are representative of what we heard from many each year: https://stemforall2021.videohall.com/pages/about/testimonials.html#value
