ESSIL: Supporting Reflection with Log-Based Visualizations (2019)
Description
Connected Worlds is a large scale immersive, interactive ecosystem developed for the New York Hall of Science, designed to encourage a systems thinking approach to sustainability where local actions in one environment may have global consequences. While the exhibit has been very popular with both family visitors and school groups, participants often do not engage with the systems aspects of the experience. Our goal is to provide a visual recap of a Connected Worlds session to support school group visitors in reflecting on their experience in order to more deeply consider the systems thinking involved. Using logs of visitors’ sessions, we have developed several visualizations that aim to help students tell stories about their experience in ways that illuminate cause and effect as it plays out in a complex system.
