Summary

Two professional development packages, Relearning to Teach Arithmetic: Addition and Subtraction and Relearning to Teach Arithmetic: Multiplication and Divisionhelp teachers think critically about how their students develop understanding of whole number operations. Each package is designed for use by a group of teachers working together—preferably across grade levels—over several sessions. The packages provide many examples of students working on whole number computation, demonstrate how students build their understanding of the four operations, and offer shared experiences for discussion and analysis so that teachers can consider the mathematical ideas central to understanding these operations.

Each package contains two videotapes and a study guide, which includes tape summaries, discussion questions, activities for each session, group facilitator notes, and homework assignments and readings.
