Author's StatementGrowing up, my grandfather and my dad were like, “It’s important for you to know how to fish and you know how to feed yourself.” … And I feel like knowing how to fish and knowing about fish has definitely helped me get a job, which led to then getting a PhD. … I know my dad is so proud because I’ll be the first in my family to even have a master’s degree … and that I’m a scientist, and he tells everybody, “My daughter is a scientist.” I don’t know if you can read my hat, but it’s from my department. And he’s like, “I have to have one [of] those hats.” He wears the hat everywhere, and he tells everybody, “My daughter is in this department.” I feel like if I didn’t finish, I would just let my dad down.
