Author's StatementSo, the story is about the firstborn [who] was Hāloa, but he was a stillborn. Hāloa is like the eternal breath. They wrapped Hāloa up and planted him, and Hāloa became the first [kalo], which is like the sustenance and, like, major food staple for our culture. And then, we [Kanaka] people, we came after that, and our firstborn fed us, provides for us, even though it was a stillborn in the land. So, talking about this deep connection of us and nature and this relationship and this familial relationship [is something] that has to be honored.
