Since its launch in Fall 2023, the Forum for Equity in Elementary Mathematics has pursued our goal of providing resources, publications, and professional learning opportunities to broaden and deepen perspectives and to open up discussions among educators about equitable math learning communities. Check out our resources.

Speaker Series: Elements of Equitable Math Learning Communities

The 2024-2025 Series focuses on four areas described in A Framework for Reflecting about Equity in the Elementary Mathematics Classroom that are critical to developing and sustaining equitable mathematics classrooms in the elementary grades. Speakers include nationally known educators and researchers whose work pertains to equity in mathematics education. Learn more and register.

Classroom Resources

The following freely available classroom resources are designed to support teachers and their students in developing and maintaining equitable learning communities:

  • Excursions are sets of 4-6 related classroom activities that encourage students to apply the math they are learning to the contexts of their own and others’ lives and communities. Six Excursions are available.  Learn more and Download.
  • Teacher Reflection Tools consist of two reflection tools, one for Whole Class Discussion and another for Small Group or Pair Work. They help teachers keep equitable participation at the forefront as they plan for and facilitate math discussions and work that happens in small groups. The tools provide a structure for collecting data and engaging in evidence-based reflection about student participation and the teaching practices that may affect it. Learn more and download.
  • A Student Reflection Tool helps teachers gather students’ input on their experiences with math, including how they view themselves and each other as participants in their math community. The tool includes sample questions to ask students throughout the year. Learn more and download.

Professional Learning Network

Connects educators interested in exploring and discussing how the Teacher and Student Reflection Tools can be used to promote equitable math learning communities. Learn more.
