Interweaving Deep Mathematics and Equitable Participation (12/12/24)

Susan Jo Russell and Deborah Schifter describe and examine videos of classrooms that emphasize mathematical discussions in which students build on each others’ ideas. This requires a dual commitment on the part of the teacher to deep mathematics and equitable participation. They consider how engaging with complex ideas can support equitable participation and how giving attention to a wide range of student ideas deepens the mathematics.

Four Elements of Equitable Math Learning Communities: An Introduction (11/20/24)

Lynne Godfrey and Marta Garcia introduce and discuss four elements that are critical to developing and sustaining equitable mathematics classrooms in the elementary grades. These four areas – deep and rigorous mathematics, equitable participation in a collaborative mathematics community, strength-based assessment and accommodation and connecting to students, their families and their communities – taken together, are cornerstones of an equitable mathematics learning community.

Storytelling Math: Math, Diversity, and the Power of Story (11/8/23)
Two children's books: "Lia and Luis: Who Has More?" and "Usha and the Big Digger"

Picture books can help all children see themselves as strong mathematical thinkers. Listen as author Ana Crespo, math education researcher Marlene Kliman, and editor Alyssa Mito Pusey take a deep dive into picture books that combine authentic cultural diversity, emotionally resonant stories, and deep mathematical ideas. They offer examples from the Storytelling Math series—a collaboration among Charlesbridge Publishing, TERC, and a host of authors and illustrators from varied cultural backgrounds—and show how these books can support equitable learning in K-2 classrooms. Learn More about Storytelling Math.
