Encouraging All Students’ Voices in Small Group Work: Fostering Equitable Participation Through Evidence-Based Reflection

Presenters: Arusha Hollister (TERC), Lynne Godfrey (Independent Consultant), and Caitlin Fleck (Boston Public Schools)

Date/Time/Location: 3/20/25, 10:50–11:50, Room 406-407

Description: Do you wonder what is happening when your students work in pairs or small groups? Are students solving problems collaboratively? Who is sharing ideas? Whose ideas are being considered? How students participate and interact with each other during small group work can impact their learning and the development of their mathematical identities and sense of agency. In this session we will consider these and other questions as we explore a reflection tool which teachers and coaches can use to collect data, reflect on the data and then make instructional shifts to move towards more equitable participation. Participants will try out the tool and discuss examples of teachers using the tool in K-5 classrooms.
