What Are Our Favorite Foods?: A Data Excursion for Grades K–1

Students think about foods in different cultures as they conduct a data investigation about favorite foods. The class explores students’ favorite part of their lunch (or snack); students’ favorite foods; and families’ favorite foods. Each time, students represent the data with hand-drawn pictures, sort the data in different ways, describe the sort, and make a representation of one of the sorts.

This Excursion involves 5 activities, to be done in sequence, and includes links to reproducible resources and a Slide Deck.

Students could apply the math that was going on to real things happening in their lives. They were making connections with their families, with their peers. They were asking questions, agreeing and disagreeing in a way that made sense, and prompting each other. It was very engaging.”
