Updates from Climate and Equity Fellows

From Claire Monk (’24)

I have been invited to the OSU Byrd Polar Climate and Research Center Speaker Series on April 2nd to engage undergraduate students in conversations about climate focused careers.  I am also attending a NE Ohio Youth Climate Summit in Cleveland on April 11th. Stay tuned for more!

From Bess Hjartarson (’24)

My colleague Dusty Rixford and I were co-presenters at the Montana Environmental Education Association annual conference in Helena, MT a few weeks ago.  Dusty is the Education Manager at American Prairie, out of Lewistown MT.  Our workshop, Prairie Roots, focused on prairie ecology and conservation through connecting students to our prairie ecosystem.  She shared a native plant lesson, and I shared what I have been doing with my STEM Trunks, particularly the Bison Ecology Trunk and the Native Plant Garden Trunk.  Both have been in use this spring, and I was particularly excited to share the success we have had with my high school students leading the trunk activities with the younger elementary students.  Next fall we are hoping to travel to Lewistown and to collaborate with Fergus HS students to do some trunk demos there.

We are planning on submitting a proposal to present at our MFPE conference this fall, emphasizing a collaboration between my HS students, and the students at Fergus HS, and how they are “Growing Their Own Roots” and connecting to their communities by sharing their knowledge of local ecology with younger students in both of our communities.
